Xu Guo

Biographical Sketch 

Xu Guo, born in 1971, obtained his Ph.D from Dalian University of Technology (DUT) in 1998. After two years Postdoctoral study at Kanazawa University (Japan), he joined DUT in 2000. He is now the Dean of the Department of Engineering Mechanics and holds the Chang Jiang Distinguished Professorship. 

Xu Guo has been working in the field of structural optimization and computational mechanics for about 30 years. He has published about 200 journal papers. He (with Prof. Gengdong Cheng) developed the 𝜖−relaxed approach for the solution of singular optimum in stress-constrained topology optimization problems in late 90’s. Recently, he developed the so-called Moving Morphable Component (MMC) method for structural topology optimization. These works have been cited intensively and extended in various ways to solve different kinds of structural optimization problems. Two of his representative papers (SMO, 1997 and JAM, 2014) have been cited 559 times and 751 times in google scholar, respectively. He is also very active in the research of data-driven and machine learning enhanced computational mechanics and developed the so-called problem independent machining learning (PIML) approach for solving super-large scale structural analysis and optimization problems. 

Xu Guo is very active in promoting the prosperity of the structural optimization society. Besides serving as the EC member of ISSMO and ASSMO, he is now the President of the Chinese Association of Computational Mechanics and the vice president of the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics. He was also the co-chair of the 13th WCSMO. Xu Guo is active in the editorial work of structural optimization related journals. He is now the editor of Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering, the associate editor of ASME-Journal of Mechanical Design and the review editor of Structural and Multidisciplinary Optimization. 

Xu Guo is the recipient of numerous academic awards and honors, including the ASSMO Award, International Chinese Association for Computational Mechanics (ICACM) Award and National Natrual Science Award (2 times). He is also the Plenary/Semi-Plenary speaker in numerous prestigious international conferences/workshops/symposiums, including the 2016 World Congress on Computational Mechanics (WCCM). 

Statement of Motivation for Serving on the ISSMO Executive Committee 

I have been engaged in the events of ISSMO for more than 20 years, experiencing its growing prosperity and served as the EC member of ISSMO since 2019. If I still have the opportunity to serve for its Executive Committee, I intend to (1) promote international collaborations between the members in our society through transnational research platforms; (2) contribute to disseminating the research progresses by organizing thematic conferences/workshops/symposiums on both long-standing and emerging topics; (3) support fostering the next generation of our society, for example, by organizing some student-oriented online courses, summer schools and pre-conference technical courses; (4) help increasing the visibility of our society by strengthening the link with other communities and stimulating the application of structural optimization theories, methods and softwares in various industrial fields; (5) make effort to accumulate the historical data/records (e.g., proceedings, pictures, videos) for ISSMO related events, which may represent the treasurable fortunes for our society and (6) prompt the communication between Chinese scholars and ISSMO.
